Telegram Proxy for Desktop, Android & Iran: SOCKS5 Setup

Telegram's official proxy guide documents two in-app choices: SOCKS5 and MTProto. SOCKS5 takes a server, port, and optional username and password. MTProto takes a server, port, and secret. They are different protocols, so an MTProto secret cannot be pasted into SOCKS5 fields and a SOCKS5 username cannot be used as an MTProto secret.

Databay supplies authenticated HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS5 access. For Telegram, select SOCKS5; Databay does not sell an MTProto proxy. Copy the gateway host, port, username, and password from the dashboard, and keep the credentials out of screenshots or shared links. If you only have an HTTP proxy, it is not the in-app Telegram route described by Telegram's documentation.

In Telegram Desktop, open Settings → Advanced → Connection type, choose to use a custom proxy, and select SOCKS5. Enter the server and port exactly as issued. Add the username and password when the endpoint requires authentication, save the entry, and enable it. Telegram's status indicator should change from connecting to connected; if it does not, stop and diagnose the route rather than cycling through credentials blindly.

Run a preflight before placing the endpoint in Telegram. Put the same host, port, protocol, and credentials into the Databay proxy checker to separate endpoint reachability from a Telegram configuration error. A successful checker result proves only that one probe reached the proxy at that time. It does not prove that Telegram is reachable from every network or that a public endpoint is trustworthy.

On Android, Telegram documents the path as Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings. Tap Add Proxy, select SOCKS5, and enter the same four connection fields: server, port, username, and password. Save the entry, turn on Use Proxy, and wait for the connected state before sending messages or starting a call. Menu wording may differ slightly by app release, but the protocol and fields should remain recognizable.

Keep one variable fixed while troubleshooting. Test the endpoint outside Telegram first, then compare the server and port character for character, then re-enter the credentials. Do not switch countries, session modes, passwords, and protocols in the same attempt: that makes a timeout impossible to localize. For iOS, Telegram places the equivalent control under Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy.

A Telegram proxy for Iran first needs a gateway that the user's current network can reach. Exit country is a separate decision: choose it for the service geography and latency your authorized use needs, not because a marketing label calls one country universally best. A nearby exit may reduce round-trip time, while a farther exit may be appropriate when the account or service legitimately operates in that region. Availability can change by access network, so no provider can guarantee one route works everywhere in Iran.

For an account session, prefer a stable residential or mobile route over aggressive per-request rotation. Databay sticky sessions request the same exit for a defined window, which avoids changing the apparent network path during one login session; they do not guarantee that the underlying carrier path or Telegram availability will remain unchanged. Compare the available network classes on the proxy network overview, then test the chosen endpoint from the actual connection that will use it. Follow local law and Telegram's terms.

A free Telegram proxy is useful for a disposable reachability check, but public endpoints can disappear, change operators, become overloaded, or expose credentials supplied at the proxy layer. Telegram warns users to obtain proxies from trusted sources because a proxy operator can observe the IP address connecting to it. Telegram also explains that app traffic remains encrypted; that does not make an unknown operator suitable for a sensitive account.

If you need a free proxy active today, filter the live proxy list for SOCKS5, note its last check time and latency, and probe it again immediately before use. Never interpret “active” as safe, private, or durable. For recurring access, use an authenticated managed endpoint with an accountable operator, rotate the password if it has been exposed, and keep a direct fallback for account recovery.

A timeout usually means the client did not complete a network connection to the gateway or through it. Check whether the hostname resolves, whether the port is reachable from the same device and network, and whether a local firewall or access network blocks that path. Connection refused generally means something answered at the host but no proxy service accepted that port. An authentication failure means the endpoint was reached but rejected the supplied credentials.

If the proxy checker succeeds and Telegram still cannot connect, confirm SOCKS5 is selected—not HTTP or MTProto—and re-enter the fields without a URL scheme. Then try the same documented setup on another authorized network to separate a local access problem from an endpoint problem. A destination refusal, challenge, or policy notice is a stop condition: a new proxy does not create permission to bypass a service control.
