Keep Astro when the existing port workflow already passes its technical, compliance, support, and economic gates. Test Databay when fine residential targeting or a traffic-first gateway is the mismatch. Test an enterprise or self-service alternative only for a requirement it actually solves. Pool size alone is not a migration reason.

Astro's Current Public Baseline#

Astro currently brands the service as Astro, while many buyers still search for AstroProxy. The name difference does not by itself signal a discontinued product. The current site sells rotating residential, mobile, and datacenter proxy access and publishes an active dashboard, FAQ, support path, and terms.

The Astro FAQ says the total pool exceeds 50 million IPs across residential, mobile-carrier, and datacenter pools in more than 100 countries. Treat both as provider-reported catalogue claims. They do not reveal the counting window, how many addresses are concurrently live, or how many a particular account can observe in one requested location.

Astro describes all three products as rotating and IPv4-only. Its short-term sticky setting is not a permanent IP product. The FAQ says a port supports HTTP(S) or SOCKS5, one protocol at a time, and can rotate by timer, connection, request, dashboard command, link, or API. Those controls are meaningful architecture facts; advertised uptime and success still require a workload-specific test.

Understand Astro's Port Architecture Before Migrating#

An Astro port is not a purchased external IP. Astro describes it as a dynamic proxy server connected through an Astro hostname, associated with one external IP at a time and one selected protocol. The external IP can change while the client keeps the same gateway object. Up to 250 simultaneous TCP connections can use a port, according to the FAQ.

That design has clear benefits. A team can isolate workloads by port, assign separate credentials or source-IP access, choose a rotation rule per lane, group and export ports, and force a change through the dashboard or API. The 100 MB entry and public trial path can make a small architecture test possible before a larger purchase.

It also creates migration work. Each port is a managed object with a fee, protocol, credentials, country, rotation state, and lifecycle. Astro says most settings can be changed after purchase, but the country and pricing plan cannot. A large deployment can therefore accumulate port inventory, per-port secrets, renewal state, archive state, and configuration that will not map one-for-one to a provider using a shared gateway plus username parameters.

Do not copy an Astro hostname, port number, API rotation link, or username into another provider's configuration. Preserve it as historical evidence, then create a separate secret and endpoint from the candidate's current dashboard.

Where Each AstroProxy Alternative Fits#

Keep Astro when port-level control is the requirement. Its documented combination of a private account port, selectable rotation, HTTP(S) or SOCKS5, small traffic minimum, trial path, and up to 250 concurrent TCP connections may fit a workload better than rebuilding it around credential-selected gateway sessions. Keeping a provider is a valid result when the current route passes the same pilot.

Test Databay for a traffic-first rotating route and fine residential targeting. Confirm current pricing, minimums, permissions, targeting, and implementation complexity; breadth does not prove better target results.

Test Decodo for a current self-service residential workflow. Decodo's residential pricing page publishes rotating and sticky sessions, common protocols, location controls, and current plan options. It may fit teams that want a conventional traffic plan and documented onboarding. Check the dashboard for allowed targeting combinations, trial conversion, renewal, tax, unused traffic, and exact endpoint syntax rather than importing an old Smartproxy tutorial.

Test IPRoyal for a different traffic or session contract. IPRoyal's current residential quick start documents random and sticky behavior, targeting, authentication, and usage reporting. It can be worth testing when irregular traffic or a requested sticky duration is the reason for leaving. A configured duration does not guarantee that a live residential participant remains online, so measure early exit loss and recovery.

This shortlist is not exhaustive and is not a performance ranking. Each candidate earns a pilot only by matching a recovered requirement that Astro does not satisfy.

Compare Targeting Without Assuming the Labels Match#

Astro's FAQ is explicit about one important limit: it does not provide a US state selector. The same answer says residential and mobile products can select country, city, and ISP or mobile carrier, while datacenter service supports country and city. Elsewhere the FAQ says a country cannot be changed after purchase. Record the product and order-time choice; do not treat a city selector as evidence of state, ZIP, or coordinate precision.

Databay's standard residential product can request a country, state, city, ZIP, coordinates, or ASN, subject to current eligible supply. That makes it a logical Astro alternative when a US state is genuinely required. It does not make every Databay product equally precise: Databay mobile targets country or continent, and datacenter has its own published controls. It also does not guarantee that a requested exit will be live or that a third-party destination will accept it.

For any provider, test location as an observed result:

  1. Record the requested country, state, city, postal area, coordinates, ISP, ASN, carrier, and network class.
  2. Connect through the exact client, protocol, credential, session, and DNS path intended for production.
  3. Capture the exit IP and compare at least one independent geolocation or ASN source with the provider result.
  4. Preserve disagreements instead of selecting the database that matches the request.
  5. Run the authorized destination task and label valid, wrong-region, challenged, denied, incomplete, and transport-failed outcomes separately.

A proxy changes network origin. It does not set GPS, browser locale, currency, time zone, delivery address, tax treatment, cookies, account country, device identity, or legal eligibility. Hold those inputs constant or record them as separate experimental variables.

Normalize Astro's Port and Traffic Costs#

Astro's homepage displayed residential traffic from US$7.30 per gigabyte, mobile from US$13.14 per gigabyte, datacenter from US$3.65 per gigabyte, and US$0.30 per port on August 23, 2026. Its FAQ states a 100 MB minimum and says the buyer pays a port fee plus traffic. These figures are a dated public snapshot, not a guaranteed quote.

The contract matters as much as the rate. Astro's FAQ distinguishes prepaid traffic from pay as you go. It says prepaid service lasts until traffic is depleted or the one-month port period ends, with remaining traffic combined when a refill extends the port. It says inactive pay-as-you-go ports can be archived after 45 days and permanently deleted 14 days later if not restored. It also says traffic billing uses whichever direction is larger—downloaded or uploaded—rather than automatically adding both. Verify all of those rules in the current dashboard and terms for the selected account.

Use one calculation for Astro and every alternative:

all-in cost per usable output = (traffic + ports or plan + tax + retries + compute + storage + review + support effort) / validated outputs

Estimate required Astro ports from independent rotation or identity lanes, not from request count. Estimate traffic from measured request and response sizes, permitted retries, and any browser assets. For an alternative, translate that same load into its actual billing unit. A lower rate can lose when location misses, challenge pages, unusable responses, idle subscriptions, or migration labor consume the apparent saving.

Treat Rotation, Stickiness, and Concurrency as Observations#

Astro publishes timer rotation from one minute, per-request rotation, manual or API change, and a sticky-session mode. It also says an address can change unexpectedly because a residential or mobile participant leaves or because of network behavior. “Sticky” is therefore a requested routing policy, not a static IP guarantee.

Connection behavior can make labels misleading. A client that reuses one TCP connection may not trigger a rule described as per connection. Parallel requests sharing one port may see the same external IP at one moment. Retries can open a new connection and change the exit. A process restart can discard a session identifier that another provider expects to persist.

For each candidate, log:

  • the gateway, port, protocol, redacted credential structure, DNS mode, and client version;
  • when the client opens, reuses, or closes connections;
  • the requested rotation or sticky setting and every observed exit in sequence;
  • completed multi-step flows, early exit loss, reconnects, timeouts, and ambiguous outcomes;
  • peak concurrent connections, queue time, valid throughput, and the destination's permitted rate budget.

Do not target 250 connections simply because Astro publishes that port ceiling. It is a provider-side maximum, not permission to send that load to a destination and not evidence that 250 concurrent tasks will produce usable results.

Include Compliance and Operations in the Buying Decision#

Astro's FAQ and About page describe KYC and AML controls and ethically sourced residential and mobile addresses. The FAQ says some demo-mode use may not initially require identity verification, advanced services can require it, and continued use after a trial requires verification. It also says SMTP and common IMAP/POP3 mail ports are unavailable and some websites may require an individual access agreement. Read the current Terms of Use and related policies before treating a technical route as an approved use case.

Record the legal entity, applicable terms, KYC owner, permitted workload, blocked destinations and ports, data handling, retention, abuse contact, refund path, and incident process for every candidate. A faster route is not a replacement if procurement or compliance cannot approve it.

Keep raw counts beside percentages. A pool headline, a homepage success claim, or one IP-check result cannot replace this evidence because none uses the destination, validation rule, time window, and workload you actually need.

Migrate One Routing Variable at a Time#

  1. Inventory Astro dependencies. Find ports, API rotation links, credentials, source-IP allowlists, proxy lists, browser profiles, worker secrets, renewals, monitoring, and runbooks.
  2. Write the requirement behind each port. Record its owner, authorized destinations, network class, location, protocol, rotation, continuity, concurrency, traffic, and stop conditions.
  3. Create separate candidate configuration. Use the new provider's current gateway, endpoint, credentials, and session syntax; never overwrite the Astro secret before preserving rollback evidence.
  4. Verify the proxy hop first. Confirm DNS, TCP, TLS or SOCKS, authentication, observed exit, and fail-closed behavior independently of the destination task.
  5. Canary one approved slice. Compare it with the scorecard while the existing route remains available, and stop on unexplained compliance, location, content, or billing differences.
  6. Reconcile traffic and cost. Compare client bytes and valid outputs with the provider meter, port or plan charges, tax, and support effort.
  7. Promote or reject by evidence. Update secrets, alerts, cancellation records, data retention, incident ownership, and documentation only after the candidate passes.

Astro is the right answer when its individual-port system is the capability being bought and it passes the test. Databay is a reasonable first pilot when fine standard-residential targeting or one-time rotating traffic is the missing capability, but reject it for permanent IPs, paid-network trial access, or unfulfilled live supply. The best AstroProxy alternative is the provider that can be rejected under the same test. That produces a defensible keep, buy, reject, or retest decision instead of a marketing ranking.
